Every spring, homeowners are itching to get out into their garden after a winter stuck indoors. Early spring is the perfect time to plant bulbs or vegetables of choice! Turning the outside spigot on after winter can be daunting. If the homeowners did not winterize their outside spigot correctly, they could have water damage that they are unaware of. Here are some steps to share with your policyholders to make sure that their spring garden flourishes without damage to their homes.
- Close Valve on Spigot: The homeowner may have left it open during the winter. Make sure it is all the way closed before turning the water on.
- Locate Water Shutoff Valve and Open It: This is located in the house, usually in the basement or crawlspace. If you have more than one spigot, follow the correct pipe to the shutoff valve.
- Turn on Spigot: The homeowner should go back outside and turn the spigot on to allow the water to flow freely.
- Turn Off Spigot and Attach Hose: The homeowner should shut the spigot off before attaching a garden house.
- Don’t leave Spigot or Hose Unattended: Sometimes homeowners leave the water running and walk away. Always make sure the water valve is completely off before going inside.
